Venture capital experts talk Michigan VC in Detroit today

Movers, shakers, and investors in the Michigan venture capital community will discuss the state and future of Michigan's VC environment this morning at Michigan\'s Private Equity Conference at Wayne State University. Among those attending are more than 300 of the nation\'s top institutional investors and private equity fund managers. They will be networking and discussing the latest trends in venture capital and what can be done to bring more of it to Michigan.

From the land before time, a new biomarker for prostate cancer

Investigating a carbohydrate binding protein that appeared in the plant kingdom before vertebrates existed, researchers at Wayne State University have determined that the protein, galectin-3, is a marker for prostate cancer progression that may one day lead to new treatments. Galectin 3 belongs to a family of 14 galectin molecules, notes Dr. Avraham Raz, professor of pathology and radiation oncology in the School of Medicine at Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Earth Week at Wayne State

The station ran reports throughout the weekend about current and upcoming Earth Week activities at Wayne State. The brief segments were culled from interviews with Dr. Irvin D. Reid, who holds the Eugene Applebaum Chair in Community Engagement, and Victor Green of the Government and Community Affairs Office regarding various aspects of the Earth Week celebration. Wayne State plans nurse-practitioner training program at Gull Road facility

Beginning this fall, Wayne State will begin a distance-education program in Kalamazoo to train nurse practitioners in either the mental health or public health fields. Students in that city will attend classes at the Kalamazoo County Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services facility. "We\'ll be using a distance learning model that uses live synchronizing of students in classrooms," said Linda Lewandowski, assistant dean of family, community and mental health in the College of Nursing. "

Famed scientist Suzuki on 'Saving Our Planet' at WSU

A 4-column story at the top of the back page notes that environmental activist and broadcaster David Suzuki will speak at Wayne State Thursday on the topic "Saving Our Planet." His appearance, which is part of Earth Week activities on campus, is part of the ongoing Focis on Contemporary Issues in Society series. Irvin D.
