Detroit's Gets First Wind Turbine

Installation began Monday on Detroit\'s first wind turbine, located on the roof of Wayne State's Engineering Technology Building. The Franklin Vertical Axis Wind Turbine will be used to power the computer lab in the building. The turbine can generate six kilowatts of electricity, which is stored in a battery to permit use as needed. Caisheng Wang, director of the computer lab, is quoted about the potential of renewable energy sources on campus and elsewhere.

WSU unveils $28M engineering facility

Wayne State University today opened the doors of a new engineering facility that leaders say will be a hotbed for cutting-edge research in sustainable energy technology, biotech innovation and other high-tech industries. The Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center is a $28 million, three-story structure that adjoins the existing main College of Engineering. The building offers new labs, an auditorium and space for student research projects, among other features. Funding for the project comes from the state and a $3 million donation by retired Troy businessman and former engineering student Marvin I. Danto and other private gifts, according to the university. Wayne State University's College of Engineering installs first-of-its-kind, small wind energy turbine in North America

Wayne State University has erected a Franklin Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) -- the first small wind energy turbine of its kind in North America -- atop the university\'s Engineering Technology Building. Mounted on a mast that extends the unit 30 feet into the air, the VAWT\'s 5kW of electrical energy will initially power the computer lab in the 20,000-square-foot building. \"Wayne State\'s decision to use the Franklin Wind Turbine as an alternative for powering its own laboratories reflects the university\'s \'translational\' research mission and its commitment to integrate sustainable technology into virtually every aspect of our operations,\" said Ralph Kummler, dean of the College of Engineering. This story has run in 171 media outlets nationwide today.

WSU health clinic is now available to all students

Barbara Redman, Wayne State University College of Nursing dean, and Stephen Cavanaugh, associate dean, comment in a story about the university's expanded health clinic. Starting Sept. 1 any student, undergraduate or graduate, who comes to campus for classes can use the facility. Students get one free visit per semester but pay for follow-up visits, well-woman exams, some types of mental health care and routine physicals. The clinic started in 2006 in response to the growing on-campus population at WSU. It\'s run by nurse practitioners, Redman said, which makes it more cost-effective than being treated by doctors.
