Wayne State's med school dean steps aside

Dr. Robert Mentzer, Jr., dean of Wayne State University's School of Medicine, stepped aside from his job citing personal reasons. In his letter, Mentzer requested the university "appoint someone to serve in my place and stead." Dr. Valerie Parisi, vice dean, will fill in for Mentzer. Mentzer will return to campus June 2 for the School of Medicine commencement.

Wayne State University extends deadline for aid plan

Wayne State University has extended for two months the eligibility deadline for a temporary financial aid package designed to help students especially impacted from the down economy. The plan, announced in March and now with a deadline of June 30, instituted a one-time doubling of university financial aid to qualified full-time freshmen. Additionally, WSU announced this week that it is offering a 50% reduction in tuition for up to two classes per semester for two semesters to alumni or spouses of alumni who have lost a full-time job within six months of the time they enroll for classes.

Wayne State extended the deadline for additional financial aid for struggling students from April 30 to June 30 and is offering a one-time doubling of financial aid to qualified full-time freshmen, as well as sophomores, juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. WSU is offering a 50 percent reduction in tuition for two classes per semester (for up to two semesters) to alumni and spouses of alumni who have lost a full-time job.

Down syndrome's extra chromosome may hold hope for those fighting cancer

New research from Children's Hospital in Boston reveals that the extra chromosome that people with Down syndrome carry also serves as a preventative against tumors. Dr. Gerald Feldman, Wayne State University Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, said that it is a promising discovery.
