Mentzer resigns as dean of Wayne State's School of Medicine

Dr. Robert Mentzer, Jr. announced Monday that he has decided to make his two-week leave of absence as dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine permanent, effective July 31. "We are greatly appreciative of Dr. Mentzer's many significant contributions to making Wayne State University School of Medicine one of the premier medical schools in the nation," said WSU President Jay Noren, in a statement. "We are thankful for his leadership and wish him well in all of his future endeavors."

Report: Research universities will dominate drug discovery

An economic impact report commissioned by the University Research Corridor shows that the state\'s research universities - powered by $887 million in life sciences research spending in 2008 - account for the vast majority of Michigan\'s pure drug discovery research. Jeff Mason, executive director of the URC, refers to the member institutions, including Wayne State, as "magnets for attracting new companies to Michigan as well as spinning companies out of these institutions."

Wayne State opening new medical education building

The $35 million Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons at Wayne State University is set for its grand opening Friday from 3 - 6 p.m. The three-story, 53,000-square-foot building will feature a student center, laboratories and classrooms for the medical school's more than 1,000 students. "Many of our students tell us that they choose Wayne State University because of our ability to see and treat such a wide variety of conditions through our commitment to serve the regional population," said Dr. Robert Frank, the executive vice dean, in a statement. "This new building and our new training equipment will ensure that we continue to produce the physicians and researchers of the future."

Wayne State's K-12 math programs get Kresge grant

Wayne State has won a $600,000 Kresge Foundation grant to operate Math Corps, as well as other mathematics education programs for K-12 students. The three-year grant will support Wayne State's Center for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics, which opened in 2007 and has about 1,500 student participants each year. Robert L. Thomas, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said the level of support and graciousness shown by the Kresge Foundation is crucial in building programs to provide improvement in mathematics education for K-12 schools.

Wayne State study seeks more efficient power grid

Caisheng Wang, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering and engineering technology in the College of Engineering, is developing a strategy that manages new and old energy sources in one dynamic, integrated system that's more efficient and reliable than current energy distribution. Wang received a $311,334 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a control strategy for using both traditional power plant-generated electricity and alternative energy distributed generation sources including wind turbines, solar panels and fuel cells.

Wayne State's PhinisheD becomes grad student's online haven

PhinisheD.com, a Web site owned by Thomas Jankowski, associate director of the Institute of Gerontology, provides graduate students with a support system that helps them deal with the rigors of graduate school. It has 4,000 members and about 500 people who visit the site every day. "So much of the academic world is competitive. People who are struggling or insecure or thinking of quitting don\'t want to be confronted. They want a sympathetic ear or a shoulder to cry on,\" Jankowski said.
