UAW begins historic convention

More than 1,200 autoworkers arrived at Cobo Center yesterday for the UAW's 35th Constitutional Convention. This year's convention has extra historical significance, according to UAW president Ron Gettelfinger, as union members mark the 75th anniversary of the UAW, and the constitutional convention is taking place in Detroit for the first time since that year. Mike Smith, director of Wayne State University's Walter P. Study in Lansing might lead to improvements in care of premature babies

A new study of premature infants at Lansing\'s Sparrow Hospital could provide a bedside measure of pain and lead to more effective pain management for those infants. Carolyn Herrington, an assistant professor in Wayne State's College of Nursing, started the study in May, comparing new stress detector equipment to the current methods of measuring pain in infants. She hopes the comparison will show the stress detector is accurate because it delivers faster results.

SE Michigan Purchasing Managers Index improves to 62.1

The Southeast Michigan economy is expanding at a faster rate and showing greater signs of recovery, according to a monthly survey of purchasing managers by Wayne State University\'s School of Business Administration and the Southeast Michigan chapter of the Institute for Supply Management. The Southeast Michigan Purchasing Managers Index - a composite index of local economic activity calculated from the survey data - improved in May to 62.1. Economist Nitin Paranjpe comments.

Wayne State's Justin Mazur signs with Royals

Former Wayne State University right-hander Justin Mazur signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Royals. Mazur was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the year this season, leading the conference in strikeouts (73), complete games (eight) and opponents\' batting average (.258). He is WSU\'s all-time leader in winning percentage with an 18-4 record. Mazur becomes the third Warrior since 2008 to sign a professional baseball contract.
