Business 'accelerators' get $3M grant

TechTown has partnered with Automation Alley, Ann Arbor SPARK and Macomb Community College/Oakland University Business Incubator to launch a new collaborative group formed to support business development throughout the region. The four business accelerators have received a $3 million grant from the New Economy Initiative, which is pushing to rebuild the Detroit area's economic base. "Each business accelerator has developed particular strengths, and by sharing them, we will all be stronger," said Randal Charlton, executive director of TechTown.

Wayne State names provost and senior vice president for academic affairs

Wayne State University President Jay Noren announced the appointment of Ronald T. Brown as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs effective August 1, 2010. Brown was dean of the College of Health Professions at Temple University for six years before joining Wayne State. "Ron consistently has earned the respect and admiration of his students and colleagues for high standards as a teacher, administrator, scholar and researcher, and he brings an outstanding record of visionary leadership to bear on his new responsibilities," Noren said in a statement.

De La Salle graduate signs with Royals

Former Wayne State University right-hander Justin Mazur signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Royals. Mazur was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the year this season, leading the conference in strikeouts (73), complete games (eight) and opponents\' batting average (.258). He is WSU\'s all-time leader in winning percentage with an 18-4 record. Mazur becomes the third Warrior since 2008 to sign a professional baseball contract.
