Wayne State, Children's Hospital boost training with new simulations

Linda Lewandowski, Elizabeth Schotanus associate professor of Pediatric Nursing at Wayne State University and Children\'s Hospital of Michigan and assistant dean of Family, Community and Mental Health in Wayne State\'s College of Nursing, received a $281,633 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). \"This grant from HHS will prepare our nursing students and Children\'s Hospital of Michigan nurses to give the best quality nursing care to this vulnerable population of patients,\" said Hilary Ratner, vice president for research at Wayne State University.

Virtual teacher training seen to lack consistency

Michael K. Barbour, assistant professor of instructional technology at Wayne State's College of Education, says educators need to teach effectively in an asynchronous environment, meaning interactions with students can occur at any time, not just in the confines of a scheduled time period. In asynchronous online learning, he said, "you're trying to facilitate a discussion that isn't happening in real time." Online teachers in an asynchronous environment need to be more proactive in engaging students, he said.

Former WSU president Irvin D. Reid conversed on upcoming FOCIS events

President Emeritus Irvin D. Reid spoke about the upcoming Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society (FOCIS) events that will bring nationally and internationally recognized speakers to Wayne State University. WSU showcasing improvements, safety

Wayne State University is using its annual Drive Safely to Wayne State campaign, taking place this week, to highlight ongoing improvements on a major thoroughfare on campus. Anthony Wayne Drive is getting new landscaping, more than 100 new parking spaces, streetlights and pedestrian crossing lights. Lanes will be reduced from four to two in each direction, and bike lanes will be installed. Loan aid, training grants approved for health workforce in Michigan

Wayne State University received $281,630 in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources, which will be used to boost health care workforce training and to prepare for up to 32 million additional people with insurance by 2014. Event hopes to sell media on Detroit

Wayne State University is partnering with the Detroit Regional News Hub and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation for "Transformation Detroit," an event inviting journalists from around the country to highlight the city's \"more complex story.\" Reporters will travel Detroit\'s Midtown and other historic areas, take a dinner cruise on the Detroit River with regional business and community leaders and hear informational briefings from leaders in manufacturing, urban revitalization, science and urban agriculture.

Actor, singer and humanitarian Harry Belafonte to deliver Keith Biennial Lecture, Oct. 30 at Wayne State Law School

The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University's Law School announces its Fifth Biennial Lecture featuring actor, singer and humanitarian Harry Belafonte.
