Grant gives inventor cash to stash trash

Christopher Harris, an administrator at Wayne State University's School of Medicine, won a $50,000 grant in August through the Pepsi Refresh Project, which gives money for ideas that help communities. Harris' prototype, Smart Binz, are recycling receptacles with solar-powered, LED-light displays on the side, which can be used for advertising or other signage. The bins, which are not yet in production, will be made out of 80 percent recycled plastic.

Wayne State offers 'real life' math applications

Mathematics Instruction Using Decision Science and Engineering Tools, or MINDSET, is a new innovative program offered by Wayne State that is designed to improve high school students' aptitude and attitudes toward math. MINDSET aims to increase student success in transitioning into college math and engineering classes or entry-level employment. It also aims to make math more appealing to women and minorities. Kenneth Chelst, professor of industrial and systems engineering in the College of Engineering and Thomas Edwards, professor of teacher education in the College of Education, wrote the core of the MINDSET curriculum.

Wayne State dean Gets $281,633 grant to fund nursing online courses

Linda Lewandowski, Elizabeth Schotanus associate professor of Pediatric Nursing at Wayne State University and Children\'s Hospital of Michigan and assistant dean of Family, Community and Mental Health in Wayne State University\'s College of Nursing, received a $281,633 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). \"This grant from HHS will prepare our nursing students and Children\'s Hospital of Michigan nurses to give the best quality nursing care to this vulnerable population of patients,\" said Hilary Ratner, vice president for research at Wayne State University.

TEDxDetroit set for Sept. 29 at Detroit Institute of Arts

TEDxDetroit, presented by Wayne State University, is expecting more than 800 people to attend its technology, entertainment and design event Sept. 29 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Wayne State speakers include: Victor Green, director of community relations, Kami Pothukuchi, associate professor of urban planning, and Steve Kahn, professor & founder of the WSU Math Corps. TEDxDetroit is not only meant to create dialogue and action, it also serves as a platform for Michigan social entrepreneurs to share their thoughts, actively apply ideas and ultimately bring positive change to Detroit.

'Leadership in business in uncertain times' small business forum to feature key interviews, business advice

Partnership launched between Business Leaders for Michigan, URC

Business Leaders for Michigan and the University Research Corridor (URC) announced the formation a new initiative called Accelerate Michigan to better align university research with the business concerns of large companies. The goal is to make the state a top ten state for economic growth, organizers said. "Business and universities are both part of the solution to our economic challenges," said Allan Gilmour, Wayne State University interim president. "But it's the combined power that can really make a difference. That's what Accelerate Michigan is all about." Wayne State students aim for Accelerate Michigan biz contest

Wayne State University expects a solid outing this fall from its students at the Accelerate Michigan Student Idea Competition, an offshoot of the $1 million Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition. WSU officials are working with a number of students who are already working on businesses. They are also reaching out to student entrepreneur organizations, the E2 Detroit conference and the new Launch Pad program to find more students interested in being their own boss. \"We want both quantity and quality,\" says Ahmad Ezzeddine, associate vice president for educational outreach at WSU. \"We want to encourage more students to participate and think about entrepreneurship.\"

Dana labor case: U.S. panel to revisit card-check decision

Wayne State business professor Marick Masters commented about a Dana Holding Corp. union case that is being revisited by the National Labor Relations Board. Speculation is that the case could open the door to automatic union recognition without waiting for an employee vote. Masters said that if board members vote to overturn the previous Dana ruling, it could cause companies to fight against neutrality agreements that allow unions to organize employees through card checks.
