Accelerate Michigan names 50 semifinalists in world's largest biz plan competition

The Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition announced that it has chosen its 50 company semi-finalists. "Michigan's public research universities, including Wayne State University, are eager to collaborate with these growing companies in order to continue to drive economic growth and development in the state," said Wayne State University President Allan Gilmour. "We hope that all the companies involved with the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition will tap the intellectual capital of all three public research universities."

Karmanos, Henry Ford, Wayne State to announce minority care cancer project

An effort to close the gap on racial disparities in cancer care is under way in a joint project offered by Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, the Josephine Ford Cancer Center at Henry Ford Health System and Wayne State University's School of Medicine. Dr. Valerie Parisi, dean of Wayne State's School of Medicine, is expected to attend a press conference Friday with other cancer researchers to discuss the project.

Wayne State prof gets $3.4M from NIH for fibromyalgia research

A Wayne State University researcher is investigating whether therapy that focuses on education, symptom management or confronting avoided emotional experiences is the best approach for fibromyalgia, a common and disabling pain condition. Mark A. Link to loneliness found as senior fraud runs rampant

At least one in 10 Detroit seniors last year reported being scammed in the prior year, according to new research from the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology (IOG). But even more surprising Peter Lichtenberg, psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience professor and director of Wayne State's IOG, it wasn\'t financial instability or failing minds that made seniors vulnerable -- it was feelings of loneliness and being undervalued. They increased the risk of being swindled by 30 percent. \"Older adults, especially those that don\'t feel important anymore, can be befriended easily,\" Lichtenberg said.

Wayne State football ties school record with eighth victory

The Wayne State Warriors football team tied the school record for overall wins in a season and league victories in a year with a 41-27 victory over visiting Indianapolis on Saturday. The Warriors reached eight wins for only the fourth time, matching the marks set in 1975, 1976 and 2008. Purchasing Managers Say Michigan Economy Showing Sustained Growth

The Southeast Michigan Purchasing Managers Index is up for the eighth straight month, providing a score of 67.1 in October. The rising index suggests a slightly stronger economic growth compared to September's score of 65. According to the monthly survey of purchasing managers compiled by Wayne State University's School of Business Administration and the Southeast Michigan chapter of the Institute for Supply Management, metro Detroit's economy is displaying signs of sustained improvement.
