Wayne State University's GO-GIRL program piques girls' interest in math, science, engineering, technology

Wayne State's GO-GIRL (Gaining Options-Girls Investigate Real LifeTM) program is featured in this story. GO-GIRL is designed to promote interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related careers and to boost mathematics skills and confidence in seventh-grade girls. Wayne State University professor inducted to the National Academy of Kinesiology

Jeff Martin, professor of exercise and sport science in Wayne State's College of Education, was recently inducted as a fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology. "It is a great honor to have a Wayne State faculty member elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology," said Hilary Ratner, vice president for research at Wayne State. "His contributions to the field are significant and have truly been a guiding force in the field of exercise and sport science."

Researcher receives nearly $3.4 million

Mark A. Lumley, professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received a five-year, $3,373,000 grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Lumley will investigate whether therapy that focuses on education, symptom management or confronting avoided emotional experiences is the best approach for fibromyalgia, a common and disabling pain condition.

Survey: Detroit area not alluring to young professionals for many reasons

Peter M. Hoffmann, associate professor of physics and materials science at Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has found that at the nanoscale, liquid water transforms into a rubber-like solid when squeezed at a certain rate. "Usually the water in our cells is considered as a rather static bystander," Hoffmann said. "But water is the most important liquid in the universe because it is the one essential ingredient we need to support life."

L'Anse Creuse partners with Wayne State University

L'Anse Creuse High School students will have the opportunity to earn college credit for the first college level history course, The World Since 1945, thanks to a new partnership between L'Anse Creuse Public Schools and Wayne State University. Ahmad Ezzeddine, associate vice president for educational outreach at Wayne State commented, "We are extremely excited about this, and working with L'Anse Creuse, as well as Macomb County, as part of a broader strategy to offer higher education opportunities to students."
