Differences stall projects at colleges: House, Senate bills $500 million apart

Infrastructure projects at Michigan\'s universities and colleges continue to languish as two differing capital outlay bills return to legislative committee. Sen. Liz Brater, D-Ann Arbor, opposed the Senate bill because of its exclusion of projects at Wayne State University, University of Michigan and Washtenaw Community College. \"They did that on a partisan basis, which is a really bad idea,\" she said. \"It\'s very short-sighted not to invest in our research universities, University of Michigan and Wayne State, at a time when we\'re trying to reinvest in advanced technologies.\" Michael Boulus, executive director of the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan, said partisanship plays too big a role in determining funding for capital projects, also pointing to the Senate\'s removal of the Wayne State and UM projects.

Dr. Michael Stellini, Wayne State University assistant professor who teaches medical ethics, is quoted in a story about drug companies paying providers with disciplinary records to research and promote new medicines. \"If someone has had a disciplinary issue in the past, it makes you wonder whether their involvement with a company that is giving them money is questionable,\" said Stellini, who also practices at the Detroit Medical Center and Karmanos Cancer Institute.
