Wayne State University students and alumni are organizing a volunteer effort this month to deliver bottled water to Flint residents still reeling from the crisis that has left their municipal water supply lead-poisoned for nearly four years.
Co-sponsored by the university’s Black Student Union (BSU) and Wayne State’s Organization of Black Alumni, the water collection drive — in which organizers are asking for hand wipes and sanitizer as well as hundreds of bottles and jugs of water — will continue through March 24, when organizers will drive to Flint to donate the items to needy families.
“We have to remember that even though the Flint water crisis doesn’t dominate the headlines anymore, it is far from over — especially for many families and children who still don’t have regular access to clean water,” said BSU president Jasmyne Brantley. “We haven’t forgotten about them here at Wayne State, and we’re launching this drive partly to make sure that no one else forgets them either.”
The sponsors are urging that donations be dropped off at specific locations on key dates:
· Thursday, March 8 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Student Center Building, First Floor
· Tuesday, March 20 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Student Center Building, First Floor
· Friday, March 23 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Academic Administration Building
