How to prepare for the All-Majors Career Fair at Wayne State

College to Career

Career Services is available to help Warriors prepare for and connect with a wide range of employers at the All-Majors Career Fair, which will be held March 26 from noon to 5 p.m., on the second floor in the Student Center Building. This event is open to incoming students, currently enrolled students, and alumni looking for full-time jobs, summer internships, co-ops, or part-time opportunities. To get started, make sure to register on Handshake

Attending the career fair is a valuable chance to network with employers and explore potential career paths. To make the most of the event, keep these key preparation tips in mind:

Do your research

Before the fair, spend some time on Handshake to see which companies will be attending. Visit their websites and LinkedIn profiles to learn more about their mission and open positions. Make a list of the employers that interest you the most so you can focus on meaningful conversations at the event.

Nail your elevator pitch

Think of your elevator pitch as your personal highlight reel — quick, compelling, and memorable. In just 30 seconds, showcase who you are, what you bring to the table, and where you’re headed. Keep it smooth, not scripted — like a conversation, not a commercial. And don’t wing it! Practice in front of a mirror, with a friend, or use the Big Interview mock interview platform to fine-tune your delivery.

Update your resume

Make sure your resume is polished, up to date, and free of errors. If possible, tailor it to highlight relevant experience for the companies you plan to meet.

Dress the part

Dress like you mean business! Employers take career fairs seriously, and so should you. Whether you go for business or business-casual, the goal is to look polished and put-together.

Students can check out The W Thrift Shop, where enrolled students can get gently used clothing —for free! The W helps take the stress out of affording professional and everyday wear, so you can focus on making a great impression in class, at an interview, or anywhere you go.

Prepare thoughtful questions

Employers appreciate candidates who show genuine interest in their organization. Research each company and prepare a few thoughtful questions about their work culture, growth opportunities, or the hiring process. This demonstrates initiative and helps you stand out from other candidates.

Follow up after the fair

The career fair might be over, but your networking game is just getting started! Connect with recruiters on LinkedIn or grab their business cards so you can follow up. Within 24 to 48 hours, send a quick thank-you message — keep it personal, mention something you talked about, and let them know you're still interested. A little effort goes a long way toward making a lasting impression.

Stay open-minded

Even if your dream company isn’t attending, be open to exploring other employers. You might discover exciting opportunities you hadn’t considered before. Keep an open mind, engage with different recruiters, and be willing to learn about a variety of career paths.

By following these tips, you’ll walk into the career fair feeling prepared, confident, and ready to make meaningful connections that could shape your future.
