Wayne State-DMC dispute requires a quick resolution

This editorial opines that the dispute between the Detroit Medical Center and the WSU School of Medicine be quickly resolved. The dispute began in early February when the DMC reduced Medicaid payments to the School of Medicine by $12 million asserting that the amount is an overpayment in violation of federal regulations. Top officials of the Wayne State medical school warn that these reductions in payments may lead to layoffs in the university\'s medical practice at the DMC, which has about 1,200 administrators and faculty. The editorial also suggests that there has been some talk of lawsuits, but Eugene Driker, chair of Wayne State University's Board of Governors, says he is hoping to avoid that possibility.

Detroit Medical Center moves to resolve dispute with WSU

The board of The Detroit Medical Center voted Tuesday to address several points raised by the Wayne State University School of Medicine over the DMC's decision to withhold $12 million in annual Medicaid payments to the medical school. The DMC board voted to place the disputed funds in an interest-bearing escrow account if the terms of the account can be agreed upon with Wayne State. DMC chairman Stephen D'Arcy said DMC will meet with WSU over the next week to work out the details of the account. DMC will also hire a former federal prosecutor with Medicaid fraud experience to determine if the $12 million in payments to WSU and additional payments from the state of Michigan violates federal laws on excessive compensation to physicians.
