Dr. Jesse Vivian on Detroit Today

In a "Detroit Today" segment about drug control and recent FDA raids and violations involving generic drug manufacturer Caraco, Dr. Jesse Vivian, professor of pharmacy at Wayne State University, said that the FDA found several violations during a series of raids dating back to October 2008, primarily with how records were kept and variability with the size of pills and capsules. The FDA has warned those who are taking the Caraco generic medication to continue until a specific warning is issued.

Universities blind to Michigan's misery

An editorial in today's Free Press is critical of annual increases in tuition by Michigan's public universities "at a time of unprecedented financial hardship throughout the state." Recently announced tuition increases at U-M, Eastern and MSU are cited. While noting that "the universities are themselves being hit hard by decreases in state funding and increased costs," the editorial contends "you can't just keep going to the well to raise revenues."

Why don't colleges cut costs?

Wayne State and other universities are mentioned in an article that focuses on whether public higher education institutions are doing enough to control costs and hold down tuition increases. The writer notes that Wayne State's Board of Governors will tackle the tuition question at Wednesday's meeting. "Slashing pay for faculty, researchers and top brass is risky business," the article says. "It's hard for people to understand the complex mission of a research university" said Charles Parrish, president of the faculty union.

John Conyers mum about wife's legal woes

Wayne State professors Lyke Thompson and Peter Henning are quoted in an AP story about Monica Conyers and whether her legal troubles will affect the career of her husband, Congressman John Conyers. "My inclination is that John Conyers' constituency is extremely independent of hers," Thompson said. Henning said the question for Detroit citizens will be, "Is the city going to get competent elected officials or people with a name? . . . It's going to be up to the voters to decide." The story ran widely around the country, with just a few examples noted above.

Fox News Channel correspondent Carina Sonn interviewed law professor Robert Sedler this morning regarding the constitutionality of a controversial prayer booth in the Warren City Hall where people experiencing special difficulties in life can receive spiritual support. The booth has been well-received by some people, however an atheist-agnostic group is criticizing the city for allowing evangelists to have a presence inside a government building.
