In units, veterans attack transition to college

An article that chronicles the transition that veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan face upon returning home mentions that Wayne State University, among other Michigan schools, has set up a chapter of the Student Veterans of America group to make the campus more veteran-friendly. Kelli Whitney, 27, an Air Force veteran, said that she has felt more comfortable at Wayne State because of connections with other veterans similar in age and mindset.

Rethink college role in job creation

An op-ed reprinted from The Detroit News states that university research must be utilized in order to procure the revival of Michigan's economy. In the piece, the writers point out that although the goal of the University Research Corridor (URC) is to transform the state\'s economy through research and technology, the creation of the URC reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of university leaders more than a concerted strategy from our state government. Wayne State is mentioned as a URC member.

According to researchers at Wayne State University, major-league players who have nicknames live 2½ years longer, on average, than those without them. Ernest Abel, professor of medicine, and statistician Michael Kruger, also say that players who debut at a young age have a shorter life expectancy than their slower-developing teammates; that players with "positive" initials have a longer lifespan than those with initials like "P.I.G."; that southpaws are a little shorter than right-handers; and that major-leaguers are more likely to die on their birthdays than chance would predict.
