Biomedical Career Advancement Program kicks off ninth year

The 2023 Biomedical Career Advancement Program, a summer research experience for high school students interested in pursuing careers in health science, began its ninth year in an opening ceremony June 26.

Forty-five students from metropolitan Detroit schools were selected to participate in the program this year.

The BCAP is a collaborative program between the Wayne State University School of Medicine, the Michigan Area Health Education Center, the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

The program was established in 2014 by Jennell White, Ph.D., an assistant professor of the WSU Department of Pharmacology.

Students are matched with a faculty mentor and assigned an independent research project that will be presented at the annual research symposium. Students also attend professional development sessions and conduct laboratory experiments throughout the program.

After successfully completing the program, students receive a monetary award and certificate at the closing ceremony in August.
