Faculty of the Wayne State University School of Medicine are invited to join special guests WSU President Kimberly Andrews Espy, Ph.D., and Provost Laurie Lauzon Clabo, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, along with the leaders of the School of Medicine’s Women in Medicine and Science group, Jan. 30 for a unique opportunity to meet and mingle with colleagues and learn more about the resources and opportunities the group offers.
Women in Medicine and Science seeks to advance women at all career levels within academic medicine and science by addressing gender equity, recruitment and retention, awards and recognition, work-life balance and career advancement by actively engaging with all members of the School of Medicine community regardless of gender. WIMS hosts events open to all interested faculty, staff and students within academic medicine and science to help achieve these goals.
The Jan. 30 event, scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. in the Margherio Family Conference Center on the School of Medicine campus, will feature President Espy and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Clabo.
Dr. Espy is the 13th president of Wayne State University. A leader with more than 25 years of experience in higher education, she previously served as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she championed social and economic opportunity by promoting affordable access to a top-quality research university education.
President Espy received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Rice University and her master’s and doctoral degrees in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Houston. She also completed a clinical/pediatric psychology internship at the University of Louisville School of Medicine/Bingham Child Guidance Center, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
As WSU’s chief academic officer, Provost Clabo has direct responsibility for the university’s 13 schools and colleges, and oversees all matters related to the instructional mission of the university, student performance and retention, and academic personnel policies and decisions.
She has a strong background in academic leadership, including more than 14 years of experience as a dean. She most recently served as dean of WSU’s College of Nursing, and is a nationally-recognized expert in nursing and interprofessional education.
Provost Clabo received her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Windsor, her master’s degree in Nursing Administration from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and her doctoral degree in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island.
