Dr. Mor honored for collaborative health care work in China

Gil Mor, M.D., Ph.D., scientific director of the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, is the recipient of the 2024 Huaxia Medical Science Award, presented by the China Preventive Medicine Association and the Huaxia Medical Association—two of China’s leading medical organizations.

The award honors Dr. Mor's significant contributions to the field of medical science, particularly in the context of international collaboration and research. The award ceremony took place in Guangzhou, China, on Dec. 14.

“I am deeply honored to receive recognition from the top medical associations in China," Dr. Mor said. "This acknowledgment further inspires my dedication to building lasting scientific connections between our institution and leading educational institutions in China.”

Dr. Mor, the John M. Malone Jr., M.D., Endowed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WSU, is internationally recognized for his work in reproductive immunology and cancer research. His long-standing collaborations with Chinese institutions, including Huazhong University of Science and Technology, or HUST, have been instrumental in advancing these fields.

Since 2009, Dr. Mor has been involved in educational and academic initiatives in China. He has been an invited speaker at top Chinese academic institutions, hospitals and national conferences, delivering more than 30 lectures across the country. His collaborative work with Professor Liao Aihua, dean of the Institute of Reproductive Health at HUST’s Center for Reproductive Medicine, has spanned education, mentorship and research, resulting in 39 co-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals and contributions to book chapters on reproductive immunology. Eleven students from HUST have trained in Dr. Mor’s lab, many securing grants in the fields of pregnancy and immunology.

Dr. Mor has also taught several courses and presented at symposiums organized by the Institute of Reproductive Health. His contributions were recognized when he was named Guest Professor in 2015 and Advisory Professor in 2023 by HUST.

In 2019, he and Professor Liao co-established the International Women's Health Research Program, a collaborative initiative between Wayne State University and HUST. Dr. Mor has also served in several prominent advisory roles, including as a member of the International Advisory Committee for the Sino-American Center of Translational Medicine at Southern Medical University (2015), and as a scientific advisor for the Shenzhen Key Laboratories for Reproductive Immunology and Peri-implantation (2016).

Dr. Mor has received several honorary academic titles, including honorary professor at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2011, adjunct professor at Central South University in 2016 and Pearl River Professor at Jinan University in Guangzhou in 2018.

The China Preventive Medicine Association is a non-profit, national organization based in China that focuses on the promotion of public health, disease prevention and health education. The CPMA works to raise awareness about the importance of disease prevention, healthy lifestyles and public health practices across China, including campaigns on vaccination, nutrition, environmental health and mental health.

The Huaxia Medical Association, a professional and academic organization, focuses on the development and advancement of medical science and health care practices, playing a significant role within China’s medical community by providing a platform for health care professionals to exchange knowledge, conduct research and enhance medical practice.
