Anne Messman, M.D., MHPE, the associate dean of Graduate Medical Education for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, has been elected to the National Board of Medical Examiners Council.
Her two-year term begins in March.

The National Board of Medical Examiners is a non-profit organization that develops and manages assessments of medical students, including the United States Medical Licensing Examination. The examinations, given to medical students and residents, are employed by licensing authorities to assist in determining qualifications to grant medical licenses.
The council provides advice to the NBME Board of Directors and staff on issues of relevance to the organization and its stakeholders, primarily on current, emerging and future issues in assessment and medical education.
"I was motivated to apply to serve on the council because the path to medical licensure via the USMLE/NBME Step exams is an incredibly important process for our medical students and residents,” said Dr. Messman, a professor of Emergency Medicine and vice chair of Education in that department. “There have been important changes in this process and some concerning trends in recent years, and I am honored to be afforded the opportunity to work with this group regarding the Step examinations as well as the shelf examinations."
Her term begins with the NBME’s annual meeting, taking place in Philadelphia during March 27-28.
