Interactive discussion “This is Everyone’s Lane: Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue" is Oct. 23

The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Women in Medicine and Science Group will host the interactive discussion “This is Everyone’s Lane: Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue,” from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Mazurek Medical Education Commons’ Room 240/241.

Stephanie Bonnie
Dr. Stephanie Bonnie is medical director of the Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program at Rutgers.

Stephanie Bonne, M.D., FACS, will lead the discussion.

Dr. Bonne, an assistant professor of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, is the medical director of the Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program initiated in 2017 at Rutgers University Hospital. She also serves as director of surveillance at the New Jersey Center for Gun Violence Research at Rutgers. She is the co-chair of the American Medical Women’s Association Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and participates in the American Public Health Association’s Interdisciplinary Gun Violence Prevention Workgroup. She practices as a surgeon in Trauma and Critical Care at Rutgers University Hospital.

Does resolving gun violence require a public health or medical approach? As health care providers, how should affected patients and families be counseled? Who is at risk of firearm injury and who should be screened? The session will explore these questions as well as research needed to understand the root causes of gun violence, identify those at risk, and determine the most effective strategies for firearm injury prevention; and, how to engage firearm owners and individuals at risk, as well as why public engagement is critical to developing programs and policies.

All are welcome to attend. A light lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. RSVP at https://rsvp.wayne.edu/this-is-everyone-s-lane-gun-violence-as-a-public-health-issue
