Michigan State Medical Society adopts student-authored resolutions

Medical students in the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s American Medical Association student organization had their collective voices successfully heard at the Michigan State Medical Society’s House of Delegates meeting held May 4-5 in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Fifteen students from Wayne State University attended the Michigan State Medical Society's House of Delegates conference.

“Wayne State student-authored resolutions had huge success this weekend, with 16 resolutions being adopted in some form by the MSMS. Some were adopted in their original form while others were amended,” said the Class of 2022’s Nora Akcasu, president of Wayne’s AMA student section. “We also had great attendance and participation from our students, with all 15 Wayne student attendees giving testimony in defense of our resolutions in front of the Reference Committee and/or House of Delegates.”

Improved Deferral Periods for Blood Donors - Samantha Rea (Approved)

Availability of Naloxone Boxes - Tabitha Moses (Approved)

Opposition to Medicaid Work Requirements - Shannon Paquette (Approved)

Restrict Access to the Michigan Automated Prescription System - Tabitha Moses (Approved)

Oppose Shackling of Incarcerated Women During Labor - Brianna Sohl (Amended)

Insurance Coverage for Out-of-Office Nutrition Education - Michael Moentmann (Amended)

Childcare Availability for Persons Receiving Substance Use Disorder Treatment - Kierstin Utter (Amended)

Ban Conversion Therapy of LGBTQ Youth in Michigan - Brianna Sohl (Approved)

Safe Gun Storage Education, Training and Counseling - Dr. Riddle Jones (with students) (Amended)

Transition to Independent Living for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder - Sean Jones (Amended)

Research into the Effects of Net Neutrality on Public Health - Akhil Vedere (Amended)

Access to Telemedicine for Michigan's Medicaid Population - Connor Buechler (Merged and substituted)

The House of Delegates is the official policy-making body of the MSMS. More than 200 Delegates and Alternate Delegates convened for the 154th annual meeting to debate and determine the policies, priorities and direction of MSMS during the ensuing 12 months and beyond. Overall, 83 resolutions were introduced for consideration by the HOD.
