Health Affairs appoints director of Office of Contract Management

Leslie Werner has been appointed director of Contract Management for Health Affairs at Wayne State University.Werner

Werner’s responsibilities include contract planning, development, implementation and tracking. She will partner with the Office of General Counsel to facilitate development and execution of contracts in compliance with university policies and procedures, and state and federal laws.

The appointment, announced May 9 by Rebecca Cooke, associate vice president for Finance and Administration for WSU Health Affairs and vice dean of Fiscal Affairs for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, is part of a reorganization of the Office of Contract Management in the Office of Health Affairs.

The Office of Contract Management for Health Affairs now reports to Ken Doherty, Wayne State University associate vice president of Procurement and Strategic Sourcing, and serves the School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, and the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The office will report directly to Doherty, with an indirect, “dotted-line” reporting relationship to Cooke as vice president for Finance and Administration for Health Affairs.

Werner previously served as associate legal officer for the Wayne State University Physician Group, where she partnered with the chief legal officer to provide leadership with guidance regarding contracting and other transactional matters, policy review and development, legal and regulatory compliance, and other legal matters. She managed WSUPG’s employment contracting process, and facilitated the negotiation and drafting of a variety of other contracts, with a particular emphasis on employment, commercial real estate leasing, and clinical and administrative service agreements.

She previously served as a policy and legal compliance consultant in support of Macomb County Community Mental Health, where she drafted, reviewed and advised regarding public contracts, and advised regarding policy development, and legal and regulatory compliance. She also previously served in administrative roles for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and for the 72nd District Court – Mental Health Court in Port Huron. She was an associate attorney for Previant, Goldberg, Uelmen, Gratz, Miller, Brueggeman S.C. in Milwaukee, Wis.

Werner received her bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, in 2003 from Oakland University, and her juris doctorate degree, cum laude, in 2007 from the Wayne State University Law School.
