Warrior Teaching Week offers fun, interactive mix of events for Wayne State instructors

Warrior Teaching Week — held Oct. 21-25 — is a campus-wide opportunity for Wayne State University instructors to visit a colleague's course, attend a workshop or webinar, and engage in informal discussions about teaching. Hosted by Wayne State’s Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL), with support from Computing & Information Technology and the University Library System, this week is meant to spark meaningful conversations, give WSU instructors the rare opportunity to sit in on each other’s classes, and explore interesting topics and teaching styles that may be within or outside of your own academic department.

Warrior Teaching Week is meant to spark meaningful conversations, give WSU instructors the rare opportunity to sit in on each other’s classes, and explore interesting topics and teaching styles that may be within or outside of your own academic department.

“Warrior Teaching Week is a fun and interactive mix of events that celebrates all the important work that Wayne State instructors do for our students,” said Sara Kacin, director of the OTL. “There are so many ways to participate, from attending events and teaching demos to dropping in on Teaching & Technology Day or our closing reception on Friday. We hope every WSU instructor finds an activity or resource that interests and inspires them during Warrior Teaching Week.”

Each day throughout the week revolves around a theme that is central to learning on Wayne State’s campus:

  • Monday, Oct. 21: Assessing Learning (includes workshops, webinar, drop-in hours/one-on-one consultations)
  • Tuesday, Oct. 22: Teaching and Technology (includes vendor fair, tech demos, panel discussion, remarks from WSU Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Keith Whitfield, webinar) will be held in the Student Center Building’s Hilberry A, B and C. Attendees will experience a vendor fair that includes Canvas/Instructure, Echo360, Microsoft, Dell, and more. There will be classroom technology demos, a panel discussion and webinar on the One Button Studio (video recording space for faculty in the Purdy/Kresge Library with professional equipment, green screens, a lightboard, and an interview set).
  • Wednesday, Oct. 23: Diversity and Inclusion (includes workshops, webinar)
  • Thursday, Oct. 24: Evidence-Based Teaching Methods (includes workshops, webinar)
  • Friday, Oct. 25: Building Community (includes drop-in hours/one-on-one consultations, lunch, and conversations)

There will be daily teaching demonstrations that provide the opportunity to visit a colleague’s classroom (either in-person or online) and explore interesting topics and teaching styles. Space is limited, so instructors are encouraged to sign up early for sessions of interest. With online classes, participants will be added as an observer to the Canvas site for the course for a week to explore course design and learning activities.

Stay connected throughout the weeklong event by following @OTLWSU on Twitter as the OTL will tweet from the events, share information about upcoming activities and link to relevant resources. Use #WarriorTeachingWeek to connect with the OTL and other Wayne State instructors.

Closing out the week on Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be the Warrior Teaching Week and Mid-Semester Assessment Program Reception. This open house event allows hosts and observers to come together and discuss teaching at Wayne State. Those interested can join as their schedules allow and do not need to stay the whole time. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP today.
