Board of Governors approves 7-Eleven, Uncle Joe's leases; elects 2019 officers

The Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments will soon be home to more food options and other product lines following two new lease approvals by the Wayne State University Board of Governors.

7-Eleven Inc. will enter into a 10-year lease with four additional five-year options to renew. The convenience store will occupy 3,433 square feet on the ground floor with frontage on Anthony Wayne Drive. The space will be available in March 2019 with a projected opening in August 2019.

Unlike any of the other 66,000 7-Eleven stores located in 17 countries, this campus location will offer fresh fruit and vegetables typically found in grocery stores, and will not sell alcohol or tobacco products.

The board also approved a nine-and-a-half-year lease agreement and a five-year renewal option with Uncle Joe’s Chicken Fingers. The Michigan-based corporation will locate on the ground floor of the Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments, occupying approximately 1,352 square feet. The restaurant space will be available in February 2019 with a projected opening in June 2019.

Uncle Joe’s Chicken Fingers, which has two other locations in the greater Detroit market, is a quick-service restaurant selling primarily chicken fingers, chicken wings and various appetizers and side items, as well as non-alcoholic beverages.

The Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments complex is currently under construction on the west side of Anthony Wayne Drive between Kirby Street and Warren Avenue in the residential precinct of campus. In addition to 841 beds of new campus housing and residential program and support spaces, the complex will also provide approximately 26,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space to serve the campus and surrounding communities.

BOG elects 2019 officers

Kim Trent was elected to a one-year term as the board’s chair during the Feb. 1 Board of Governors meeting. Trent, whose eight-year term as governor runs through 2020, currently serves as senior vice president, corporate and civic engagement for Compass Strategies LLC., a Detroit-based communications, government relations and community relations firm.

Also elected to one-year terms as board officers were William Decatur and Julie H. Miller. Decatur, re-elected treasurer of the board, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 2015. He is vice president for finance and business operations, treasurer, and chief financial officer at Wayne State University. Miller was re-elected secretary to the board. She has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 2001. Miller also is vice president and secretary of the university.

Wayne State University's Board of Governors is one of three university governing bodies in Michigan — along with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University — that has constitutional independence. Its members, who serve eight-year terms, are elected by voters throughout Michigan.
