Second annual Baroudeur deemed a success by participants

More than 850 cyclists rolled through Detroit and its surrounding communities on Saturday, Aug. 20, during Wayne State’s second annual Baroudeur cycling event.

Results from a post-ride survey have been tabulated and, like last year, the event was deemed a breakaway success. More than a third of the riders took the time to share their thoughts and, when rating “the overall ride experience,” 97 percent rated The Baroudeur as excellent or very good.

WSU President M. Roy Wilson, who proposed creating the ride, was pleased with the day.

“I’ve heard from several people who felt it was even better than our very successful inaugural event,” said Wilson. “The weather was fantastic, the course was excellent, and most participants hung around for fellowship and lunch on campus. I cannot thank our 278 volunteers enough for everything they did to make the day a success.”

In addition to generating more than $2,300 for scholarships in just the event’s second year, Wayne State also contributed $1 per rider — a total of $853 — to the League of Michigan Bicyclists to support bicycle education and advocacy.

“Now that The Baroudeur is firmly established, we are exploring the addition of a peer-to-peer fundraising option next year to raise more money for students,” said Ride Director Matt Lockwood.

Barouduer volunteer and Wayne State student Deja Moore-Grant expressed her appreciation for the event.

“It’s great to see people from the community and Wayne State — especially President Wilson — support students in this way,” Grant said. “I love that that members of the university are being active contributors in making sure students have the resources we need.”

The 2017 Baroudeur will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19. Visit baroudeur.wayne.edu to get updates on registration.
