Wayne State University officially welcomed more than 2,000 new Warriors and their families during New Student Convocation on Aug. 30.

The annual event marked the formal beginning of the incoming students' journey at WSU and brought together university administration, faculty and staff. Convocation featured remarks from campus leaders, who offered the newest Warriors advice about getting involved, challenging themselves and making the most of their time on campus.

Provost Keith Whitfield encouraged students to engage in classes, use all available resources and take accountability for their success.

"This is your university, and you have to treat it as such. You have to pay attention, you have to take care of it, and you have to engage with it," Whitfield said. "If you do, it will take care of you "¦ take those steps toward making a difference in your life and in the world."

New Student Convocation was followed by the FestiFall picnic, which offered students the chance to meet the dean of their respective college/school and to learn more about involvement in WSU's learning communities and student organizations.

"You're all at a world class university. Do not let this opportunity to learn pass you by," Student Senate President Anthony Eid told the incoming Warriors. "Open yourself to new ideas, opinions and ways of thinking."

Freshman Stefanie Weaver, 18, of New Baltimore, attended FestiFall and is excited to start the semester. Weaver, who will major in nursing, looks forward to getting involved on campus.

"I feel like Wayne State offers a lot of diversity that other schools don't," Weaver said. "I chose to go to school in Detroit because I know this diversity will give me more exposure and experience."
