Looking to get involved and pay it forward in and around Detroit? Wayne State University offers a number of opportunities to reach out and show your Warrior pride over the next several weeks.
Through Wayne Cares - a university initiative that brings together the WSU community for the purposes of charitable giving and outreach - you can march for babies, help give the city a makeover, and walk (or run) to eliminate disease.
Last week, the "W" Week Community Service Initiative, a partnership between the Wayne State University Athletics Department, Wayne Cares and Covenant House Michigan, concluded the annual Basic Needs drive, which collects small toiletry items for homeless youth and adults in the community. WSU student-athletes and volunteers distributed 2,500 basic needs bags to individuals in Cass Park, Neighborhood Services Organization, Mariners Inn, Covenant House and other locations around the city.
Since 2011, more than 200,000 items have been collected, thanks to generous Warriors and sponsors.
"The primary goal of the Wayne Cares initiative is to help university units work together and collaborate with each other for the good of the community," said Community Relations Director Victor Green. "We hope that you will join us in making a difference this spring and beyond."
