Community  engagement is an integral part of Wayne State's urban mission. From service learning for students to combined charitable giving for faculty and staff, WSU is dedicated to providing the campus community with numerous opportunities to give back.

Students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited to join the university in helping the people of Flint.

Most people are aware of  the issues facing Flint residents concerning their water supply. Wayne State encourages anyone who is able and inspired to support the Wayne State for Flint campaign.

All financial proceeds will be donated to the United Way of Genesee County Flint Water Fund.

"We are proud of the Wayne State University community for working together to support this critically important cause," said  Patrick Lindsey, vice president for  government and community affairs. "It is imperative that we remain engaged and continue to donate our time and other resources to the citizens of Flint as they face this ongoing crisis."

In addition to monetary donations, water and hygiene items are needed. Volunteers also are being recruited to work in Flint each Friday as needed. The Dean of Students Office is coordinating the Fridays in Flint program throughout February.

"Wayne State University is a community of doers," said David Strauss, dean of students.  "We feel passionately about helping our neighbors in Flint. This is a great way for Wayne State to be involved in making a difference."

Transportation will be provided from Wayne State's campus to various locations in Flint. Volunteering will take place between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Community Engagement is this week's "Distinctively Wayne State University" focus area. "Distinctively Wayne State University" is WSU's five-year strategic plan, laying the foundation for strategic focus areas and core values for 2016-21. Learn more at  strategicplan.wayne.edu.
