As Wayne State University's longest-serving police officer, Lt. Henry "Hank" Villerot is revered by many in his department as a mentor and trusted advisor.

The 40-year WSU Police Department veteran has touched the lives of law enforcement and community members with his passion for the profession and dedication to excellence.

"Lt. Villerot is a man of great integrity and an amazing leader," said Investigator Jaclyn Wilton. "He treats his subordinates like equals and inspires them to work hard. He leaves a lasting legacy at the Wayne State University Police Department of what true professional policing is."

After four decades of service with WSUPD, Villerot is retiring.

"I have to wrap my head around not being a police officer anymore," he said. "I enjoy working here. I've got a good crew. I've worked with outstanding people in this department. But I'll be back."

Villerot has worn many hats over the years, serving as an officer, investigator and sergeant. As a sergeant, he supervised road officers and later supervised officers assigned to the investigation section and crime abatement team. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1995 and has since overseen the investigative section. Prior to Wayne State, Villerot worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

"Hank is one of a kind," Investigator Chris Powell said. "He's very much a cornerstone of the department. We're going to miss him."

A retirement celebration will be held from 2-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at WSUPD headquarters, 6050 Cass Avenue. The campus community is invited to attend.
