Physicians educated by the Wayne State University School of Medicine have been voted by patients across the United States as among the best doctors in the nation.

The eighth annual Vitals Patients’ Choice Awards ranked physicians who were educated at the WSU School of Medicine fourth in the nation based on patient reviews of bedside manner, how much time doctors spend with patients, how quickly they see patients and other factors.

The rankings are based on ratings and reviews by more than 6 million patients and analyzed by Vitals. The organization works to provide cost and quality transparency through consumer engagement programs.

“Everyone wants a knowledgeable doctor. And in today’s busy world, people want a doctor who values their time and doesn’t keep them waiting," said Mitch Rothschild, founder and executive chairman for Vitals. “We believe those awards are useful in helping consumers search for and select the best qualified doctor.”

The top 10 physician-producing universities, according to this year’s rankings, are University of Illinois – Chicago, Indiana University, Ohio State University, Wayne State University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, New York University, Drexel University, University of Texas at Houston, Louisiana State University at New Orleans and University of Texas Southwestern.

“That patients rank the physicians we educate so highly should not come as a surprise,” said Jack D. Sobel, M.D., dean of the WSU School of Medicine. “Our graduates are in high demand across the nation when it comes to selecting physicians for residency programs, and they have honed their skills in urban clinical excellence in Detroit, skills that easily translate to excellent patient care no matter where they practice.”
