Sign up for text and email alerts to stay connected

On the heels of a holiday break from classes and studying, the winter semester signals a return to campus life and all of the details that come with being a student.

In an effort to ease the transition back to campus, there are some helpful resources and tips designed to help students deal with numerous tasks.

If you haven’t already, sign up to receive text and/or email alerts that will keep you informed about a variety of topics. For example, messaging is available regarding course times, location changes, final grade postings, hold releases, financial aid notifications and announcements from faculty about Blackboard courses.

In the event of an emergency, texts and emails offer important information and updates about university closures due to weather conditions, power outages and a host of other potential causes.

“The Broadcast Messaging Service is the quickest way for Wayne State to reach you in the event of an emergency,” said Tom Duszynski, director of quality, communications and compliance for Computing and Information Technology. “This is especially important in the winter, when the weather can disrupt class schedules. And for those who have already registered, please update your registration information if you have changed your cell phone number or carrier.”

For more information about broadcast messaging and to register, visit the University Broadcast Messaging Service.

Information about safety and resources provided is available at wayne.edu/safety, where you’ll find tips on preparedness, emergency procedures, crime statistics, university contacts and more. While on the safety website, you also can sign up for the University Broadcast Messaging Service.

One final thought about the start of the semester: staying safe on the wintry roads and sidewalks. Though winter of 2015-16 has only been a whimper compared to the previous two tundra-like winters in Michigan, it’s still early in the season.

Wayne State’s grounds department, Facilities Planning and Management, has the daunting charge of keeping 200 acres of campus streets, parking lots and sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Students are encouraged to report unsafe areas, or areas that require greater attention such as disability access points or curb sections, by calling 313-577-4315 or 313-577-6954.
