May is National Bike Month and Detroit will celebrate Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15, at several locations throughout greater downtown.

Wayne State University will host a Midtown pit stop located in front of Old Main with free coffee and pastries, sponsored by Fourteen East Cafe and Avalon Bakery, for bike commuters.

Learn about sustainable commuting options with the Detroit Commuter Challenge, Wheelhouse Detroit and other local resources for bike maintenance. Additionally, registration information for the Baroudeur, WSU's inaugural cycling event to raise money for student scholarships, will be available.

“Whether you're a regular rider or considering the idea for the first time, Wayne State encourages you to come meet others interested in greening their commute,” said Jeri Stroupe, senior project administrator for the Office of Economic Development.

To join a WSU convoy traveling from Birmingham and through Royal Oak, email Rob MacGregor. For more information or to volunteer, email Jeri Stroupe.

Established in 1956 and sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month showcases the many benefits of bicycling — and encourages more Americans to give biking a try.
