WDET and NPR present Motor City Drive

​National Public Radio host Michel Martin is headed to Detroit to explore how creatives are helping to drive the Motor City forward.

In collaboration with WDET-FM 101.9, Wayne State University's public radio station, Martin will bring together some of the city's most innovative creative minds for NPR Presents: Michel Martin Motor City Drive. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21 at the Carr Center, 311 E. Grand River Avenue. 

Martin will join Travis Wright, host and executive producer of WDET's Culture City, and June M. Thomas, Centennial Professor at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, to lead a conversation with a panel of artists, chefs, craftsmen and performers. 

Panelists include: 

  • Jessica Care Moore, executive producer of Black Women Rock!
  • Rola Nashef, Detroit Unleaded filmmaker 
  • Charketa Glover, fashion designer 
  • Samantha White, Shakespeare in Detroit theatre director 
  • Aaron Cozadd, executive chef for Union Joints restaurant group
  • Kate Daughdrill, artist and urban farmer 
  • Bridget Russo, marketing director for Shinola
  • Juan Atkins, techno pioneer

A wine and chocolate reception follows the panel discussion. Additionally, the audience will be treated to a performance by members of the gospel choir Larry Callahan and Selected of God, known for their performance in the Chrysler 200 Superbowl XLV commercial.  

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $21 ($16 for students) and can be purchased online.
