Traffic congestion is a nuisance for commuters in Detroit and major cities worldwide. So how can communities move more cars through smaller spaces?

Joseph Hummer, professor and chair of the WSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will explore the possibilities during a Science Under the Dome lecture at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

Hummer will show why alternative intersection and interchange designs have promise to relieve congestion. He will review the current menu of alternative designs and show some that have not yet been built but have promise for the future. In the end, he will provide a vision for a city that allows vehicles and pedestrians to flow smoothly to wherever they want to go.
