Each year, the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center takes two groups of incoming freshmen on outdoor adventure trips that can positively impact their college career.  

The three-day, two-night trips are designed to expose incoming freshmen to the college experience at Wayne State while forming relationships with other new students. Wayne State faculty and staff volunteers on the trips help freshmen connect to university departments and services.

This year’s Freshmen Quests take place Aug. 7-9 and Aug. 14-16. The groups will board canoes in Roscommon, Mich., before winding 44 miles down the Au Sable River toward their final destination in Mio, Mich. 

The trips are tied to KIN 2560, a two-credit course that continues throughout the fall semester.  

“The whole point of the Freshmen Quest is to engage the students and help them feel at home at WSU,” said Christy Nolan, director of campus recreation. “Having someone they know in the administration enables them to navigate the university and helps with retention.”
