National security law expert Paul Dubinsky, associate professor of law at Wayne State University Law School, is avidly following the ongoing situation of former CIA employee Edward Snowden exposing the National Security Agency’s data collection program.

Snowden left his job, traveled to Hong Kong, and then revealed himself publicly over the weekend as the source of the leaks about the government’s controversial data collection program.  Meanwhile, national debate rages on about the ethics of the government having access to everyone’s phone and Internet records, and about what will happen to Snowden.

Dubinsky is available to talk to reporters with questions regarding the situation.

“The interesting question is whether the government’s pursuit of individuals accused of national security crimes should be wholly different, in terms of extradition, than its pursuit of those accused of drug crimes, violent crimes and human rights atrocities,” Dubinsky said. “Does the U.S. government need to renegotiate some of our bilateral extradition treaties which were not written with national security crimes in mind? Would the matter be different if the leaker were not a U.S. citizen? What do we do when a scientist from Iran privy to nuclear secrets seeks to defect to the United States?”

Dubinsky teaches national security law, among other courses, at Wayne Law. He came to the Law School in 2005, after teaching at Yale Law School and Georgetown University Law Center. He has served as associate director of the Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic and associate director of the Orville H. Schell Jr. Center for International Human Rights, and as a member of the U.S. delegation to the Hague Conference on Private International Law. Before his career as a scholar, he was an associate with Wilmer Cutler & Pickering.

Dubinsky is a graduate of Yale College, Harvard Law School and the Universiteit Katholieke of Leuven, Belgium.  He often gives presentations on national security legal issues.
