Last week, Wayne State University hosted a reopening ceremony for the Minoru Yamasaki-designed McGregor Memorial Conference Center Reflecting Pools. Hundreds walked the red carpet leading to McGregor for the festivities, which kicked off at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.
The pools were drained because of a damaged foundation in the late '90s. Last year, the university allocated $1.8 million to restore the pools to their former glory.
The restoration project included significant repairs to the concrete foundation, renovation of the plumbing and mechanics, and a new lighting scheme to enhance the drama of the pool at night.

Wayne State Insiders to explore the University Art Collection
If you missed the reopening celebration, join the Wayne State Insiders from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, as the group tours the University Art Collection, including the newly restored McGregor Sculpture Garden and Reflecting Pools.
The tour will begin at Alumni House to learn more about Yamasaki’s vision and the restoration project.
Yamasaki, best known for designing the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, distinguished himself as one of the premier architects of the 20th century with his signature style — tall, narrow windows; gothic-inspired arches; and open ground-level areas.
