Wayne State University is challenging the campus community to take action during this year's Earth Week. For 2013, WSU is encouraging students, faculty and staff to make a difference by reducing their energy usage, curbing waste, using alternative modes of transportation and buying local foods.
Daryl Pierson, WSU sustainability coordinator, says this year's emphasis is to develop changes to everyday practices so everyone can get in the habit of protecting the environment. He says reducing the overall use of fossil fuels and cutting campus greenhouse gas emission will go a long way toward lasting change.
"In past we've focused on speakers, fairs and other events to bring awareness to Earth Day," says Pierson. "This year we want to engage the campus in changing behaviors so that Earth Week has a lasting impact. Being ‘green' and sustainable is more than just a one-day activity. It must be a lifestyle."
Here's a rundown of campus actions recommended for April 19-24:
April 19
Use alternative transportation modes
April 22
Save energy and reduce water by switching it off
April 23
Buy local food and goods
April 24
Recycling awareness and E-waste collection
