Constitutional law expert Robert Sedler, distinguished professor at Wayne Law, is available for comment regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Health Care Act.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the act the week of June 25.

The court will review the individual mandate provision that requires most people to purchase health insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty. At question is whether this mandate is within the purview of Congress to guide the national economy via regulation of interstate commerce.

The court can do one of three things:

1. Uphold the act; 
2. Declare the individual mandate the foundation of the act and, if that is declared unconstitutional, strike down the Affordable Health Care Act; or
3. Remove the individual mandate while upholding most of the provisions (such as a requirement that insurers permit children to stay on their parents’ health insurance policies until age 26).
