WSU President Allan Gilmour tells of his battle with cancer in Detroit Free Press/AP feature

An interview story with Wayne State University President Allan Gilmour chronicles his battle with prostate cancer as he leads one of Michigan's largest universities. A PSA test last fall came back normal, but in January, another test came back that alerted his doctors to a possible problem. A biopsy confirmed he had prostate cancer -- and it needed to be treated aggressively. He said he did not panic, but was surprised at the change in tests over such a short time. The second reaction was, "We'll do whatever needs to be done." He began treatments this spring which included 43 sessions spread over just more than eight weeks. Those who work with President Gilmour say he has kept driving change forward and has not let the cancer keep him back. "It's hard to tell from the outside when he's experiencing pain or fatigue," said Michael Wright, WSU's vice president for marketing and chief of staff. "Here's a very successful man who didn't have to stay, but he did because he wanted to see the work get finished." Louis Lessem, WSU's general counsel, said President Gilmour's "been courageous to do what he's doing while going through this. He tended to pick his shots more often, but the progress (here) continued. Allan has a good staff around him, and he inspires loyalty." A photo of President Gilmour is included.
