The Wayne State Abraham Lincoln Brigade Veterans Scholarship Committee is accepting nominations and applications for a $1,000 student scholarship.

The scholarship was established in 1982 to commemorate the contribution of Wayne State University students who went to Spain in the 1930s to fight fascism and defend the democratic Republic in the International Brigades. The scholarship has been supported over the years by veterans of the Lincoln Brigade, local community leaders, and a concert by legendary folk singer Pete Singer.

Scholarships will be awarded to currently enrolled Wayne State undergraduate and graduate students who, through their activities or research promoting peace and justice in social, political, and community engagement, best exemplify the values of the WSU students who fought fascism in Spain in the late 1930s. Previous winners have included students who established a free medical clinic in Detroit, fought apartheid in South Africa, worked to alleviate poverty in the slums of Brazil, and spearheaded the greening of Detroit effort.

Nominations of students and self-nominations should be sent to: Dr. Aaron Retish, Department of History, 3094 FAB or electronically to aretish@wayne.edu. Nominations should be accompanied by a statement up to 500 words explaining why the nominee is deserving of the award.

Deadline for nominations is March 28.
