Wayne State has won the Gift of Life Campus Challenge, outperforming 18 other institutions by inspiring the most people – 1,136 – to join the state’s organ donor registry.

Many WSU students, faculty and staff were moved by the story of Rebecca Butler, a 20-year-old business student who died in May 2011 while awaiting a lung transplant. Rebecca became a tissue donor, giving others the second chance that she did not receive.

Thanks to the competition, more than 3,416 people joined the registry. For the scores of participating schools, visit http://www.giftoflifemichigan.org/.

The Gift of Life Campus Challenge is the nation’s largest college-based organ donor drive. In its nine-year history more than 31,000 people have been added to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
