An article by Dr. Viveka Borum, Assistant Professor in the College of Education, was published in the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering in December 2011. The article, titled "Why didn't I know? Black Women Mathematicians and Their Avenues of Exposure to the Doctorate" addresses the scarcity of women of color who pursue mathematics and other STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Dr. Borum received her bachelors and masters degrees in Mathematics at WSU. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, she joined Math Corps, an academic enrichment and mentoring program that brings middle and high school students from Detroit public schools together with college students and professional mathematicians. After completing her doctorate at Columbia University, Dr. Borum returned to WSU and joined the Mathematics Education faculty. Her areas of expertise include exploring high-level mathematics in K-12, history of women in mathematics and equity issues in mathematics.
