Criminal Justice alumni launch mentor program to assist Wayne State University students with academic success and career choices

The Criminal Justice Alumni Advisory Group at Wayne State University has created a mentoring program for undergraduate students who major in the criminal justice field. The program will be launched on Oct. 7, 2010, at an Alumni Meet and Greet Reception in downtown Detroit.

Several graduates of the Department of Criminal Justice have careers in various areas of the justice system. They include: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearm, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Department of Corrections, U.S. District Courts, Homeland Security, police departments, probation offices, law, as well as the private sector in risk management, loss prevention, and workplace violence.

The objective of the mentoring program is to encourage academic achievement and to better prepare students for a career in criminal justice. The Criminal Justice Alumni Advisory Board hopes that more alumni and community organizations will become engaged with the department in this effort.

Eric Lambert, professor and department chair, believes that students, mentors and the community will benefit from the mentoring program. "Mentors will enrich their lives by volunteering their time to the nurturing and growth of students. Students will gain a great learning experience by uniting with alumni already successful in their careers. This is a unique opportunity to help develop our future leaders of tomorrow," Lambert said.
