Nearly 1,000 high school students set to experience Wayne State on April 27 AP Day

An estimated 1,000 area high school students will visit Wayne State University's Detroit campus from 10 a.m. through noon on Tuesday, April 27, during an expanded Advanced Placement Day (AP Day). The intensive two-hour event includes faculty presentations and discussions about subjects that the metro Detroit students have been studying over the course of the year.

Wayne State University Professor Marc Kruman, chair of the history department, director of WSU's Center for the Study of Citizenship and AP Day founder, says that participating students leave each year enthused about the intellectual experience. "On the eve of the AP exams, these students are invigorated by these special presentations by Wayne State faculty, who work with experienced AP teachers to determine the topics."

The AP program is designed for students worldwide who want to learn and achieve at the highest level. Through AP's college-level courses and exams, students can earn college credit and advanced placement while interacting with teachers from various disciplines and cultures.

This year's AP Day program at Wayne State has been expanded significantly. In addition to history (United States, European and world history) and psychology, program offerings will include calculus, biology, geography, Spanish, French and computer science.

The university also is offering students an opportunity to tour campus for an up-close view of what it's like to live and learn in a college town.

The program, sponsored by Wayne State's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and managed by the Department of History, began eight years ago and continues to expand, with 600 AP students attending last year.
