Medical students meet their match

Fourth-year medical students at Wayne State University and throughout the United States are waiting anxiously for Thursday, March 18, 2010. It's known as Match Day, an annual event when students around the country simultaneously learn where they will train during their medical residencies. It's a day that determines where they will spend the next three to seven years of their life, a day with significant impact on their careers and relationships.

Approximately 280 Wayne State students will gather with family and friends beginning at 11 a.m. in the Scott Hall cafeteria, 540 E. Canfield, next to Detroit Receiving Hospital. Match results will be revealed promptly at noon during an envelope-opening ceremony.

Most medical students have spent months interviewing at hospitals across the country, searching for the ideal place to practice their chosen specialty. They ranked their top choices and the hospitals ranked their top student choices. Then a computer program administered by the National Resident Matching Program matched the students and hospitals together.

For many students, finding out where they match is the most important event since learning where they would be attending medical school.

Because of students' anticipation and the excitement of learning where they will train, Match Day often creates many good video and photo opportunities.

Wayne State University is a premier urban research university offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to nearly 32,000 students.
