The Friends of the Freer House, Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute, present a benefit concert by the Scarab Club String Quartet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7 at the historic Charles Lang Freer House

What: On Feb. 7 the Friends of the Freer House will host a recreation of the first concert performed at the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1924. Marking the 86th anniversary of the inaugural recitals at the newly opened Freer Gallery, this concert of classical and contemporary chamber music will be performed by the Scarab Club String Quartet in the intimate setting of the historic Charles Lang Freer House in Detroit. The concert will benefit the Friends of the Freer House and includes a reception and tour following the performance.

The 1924 Freer Gallery of Art concerts were sponsored by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, founder of the Berkshire Music Festival, to encourage support for the Library of Congress' musical manuscript collection. The recitals featured works primarily by 20th century composers of chamber music and winners of the annual Berkshire Prize. The Detroit concert program includes works by Haydn, Weiner, Warner and Malipiero.

When and where: The concert will be held Sunday, February 7 at 2 p.m. at the Charles Lang Freer House (Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute/WSU), 71 E. Ferry St. in Detroit, one block north of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Cost: Tickets are $25 general public, $10 students, $20 members of the Friends of the Freer House and $50 Patrons. Patron-level tickets include reserved seating and parking. Advance registration is required: RSVP to Rose Foster at (313) 872-1790.
