WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT COMPOSERS TO PUT ON FREE CONCERT

DETROIT, MI (March 15, 2007) – The Wayne State University Department of Music is proud to present the 35th annual Wayne Composer’s Concert at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, March 28.  The performance will be held on Wayne’s campus in the Schaver Music Recital Hall, located at 480 W. Hancock in Detroit.  Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.  For additional information call (313) 577-1795 or visit www.music.wayne.edu.

The annual Composer’s Concert is a source of the newest music coming out of Detroit, a city that holds one of the greatest traditions of new music in the nation.  The musical styles presented in the concert vary from extreme avant-garde to the conservative modernist.  Instrumentations range from traditional choral settings to didgeridoos.  Outlining the undergraduate composers are WSU Music Seniors John DePasquale (Clinton Township) and Michael Karloff (Windsor, Ontario Canada), along with fellow undergraduate composers Nick Buzinski (Rochester Hills), Anthony Lai (Dearborn), and Kyle Canjar (Dryden).  The concert will also feature new music of Chris Skebo (Sterling Heights), who has already completed the composition program and graduate composer Paul Kinney (Westland), who will be premiering his Master’s piece.

All composers featured on the concert study with Dr. James Hartway, Wayne State’s Distinguished Professor of Music.  Hartway heads the Music Department’s division of composition and theory and is an accomplished composer, having written multiple works performed by world renowned ensembles such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.  Dr. Hartway’s willingness to share his extensive experiences in the world of composition, along with his highly developed expertise in the field, allows WSU’s composition students to present this annual concert.
