The Wayne State University Alumni Association this fall will offer three new CareerBoost! workshops aimed at recent grads. Hosted by the Recent Alumni Committee, the workshops cover topics such as time management, business planning and self-employment.
“Our CareerBoost! workshops are a unique extension to the many special events we offer throughout the year,” says Marguerite Rigby, executive director of the alumni association. “They are geared toward alumni who have graduated in the last 10 years, so they can achieve professional development while benefiting from the strong support system of their alma mater. They’ve earned their degree, and now we’re giving them an added ‘boost’ to either land their dream job or advance within their current position.”
The first workshop, “Job Searching Beyond the Internet,” looks at how the best jobs never are posted on the Web and how more and more often, opportunities for dream jobs are accessible only through networking, recruiters and other professionals. The Sept. 15 workshop will be led by
On Oct. 12, the next CareerBoost!, “Balance for Life: Mastering Your Time,” will feature Barry Demp of Troy-based Barry Demp Consulting, who will explore time management at work and how it can result in performance on the job, at home and in relationships. Demp, a professional career coach, will teach alumni and friends how to achieve balance.
On Nov. 16, “Bringing the Entrepreneur Ethic to Work,” will uncover how living the “start-up philosophy” in business can improve your prospects for advancement. A panel of alumni entrepreneurs will share their success stories and offer advice about how alumni and friends can distinguish themselves on the job.
